Throwback Time! See seven mobile phones that rocked 2007.

  • They were the thing back in the day.
An iPhone render. The next iPhone is expected later this month

With the next iPhone about to drop any day now, we cannot help but take a walk down memory lane and remember the phones that rocked our world 10 years ago.

Here are the 10 phones that made 2007 an amazing year in telecommunication history.

1. The iPhone

The iconic iPhone

That’s right. It’s been 10 years since Steve Jobs introduced the revolutionary mobile device to the world. The interface of the phone and its sleek design made the iPhone a game changer in 2007 and a tech favorite in 2017.

2. Motorola RAZR2 V9m

Razr

You may not know many people who still use Motorola today but it was a different story ten years ago. Motorola was one of the biggest phone brands on the planet and the RAZR2 was one of the coolest phones to own. How times have changed!

3. Nokia N95

Nokia n95

In 2007, PC Mag called Nokia N95 ‘the most powerful smartphone on the market today’. Why? Back then, the Nokia ‘smartphone’ was popular for its GPS and Wi-Fi functions. It was also one of the few phones that came unlocked back then. This was definitely one of the more memorable Nokia devices to hit the market.

4. BlackBerry 8300 Curve

One of the true legacy BB phones

You probably still have some friends that use BlackBerry phones and yes, you may still have a BBM account but one thing is for sure, you cannot compare the fan base that the BlackBerry has today with the one it had in 2007.

The BlackBerry was THE work phone of 2007 and the ‘Curve’ was the model to have. The small and cute body of the Curve coupled with its tiny keyboard gives us throwback chills all over.

5. Palm Centro

Centro

Like the BlackBerry, the Palm Centro, was popular among those worked in the corporate world. The difference between the Palm and the ‘Berry, however, was their advertisement.

They were one of the first brands to use viral videos in commercials and this won them a place in the hearts of the younger generation.

6. Samsung FlipShot SCH-U900

Its swivel design was an eye-catcher

This phone’s swivel design made it one of the coolest phones of the year. Not only did the phone have a side slider, but it also had a touch screen. The phone also had a speakerphone and a slot for an SD card. All these features in one phone? 2007 wasn’t ready.

7. Helio Ocean

Ocean

Helio created the phone that every teenager wanted. Everything about the design and interface of the phone screamed youth.

The phone got the ultimate endorsement from Kim Kardashian when she was spotted using the device on an episode of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians.’

Biafra: South-East elders submit petition to US, UN on Igbos’ plight in Nigeria By John Owen Nwachukwu

A team of Igbo leaders under the aegis of Alaigbo Development Foundation and South-East Elders’ Forum have submitted a petition on the plight of Igbo people in Nigeria to the United States House of Representatives and the United Nations headquarters.
A member of the delegation, Dr Dozie Ikedife explained that the team spent some weeks in the US to ensure that the message was delivered to the recipients for necessary action.
Ikedife said “the two bodies made up of traditional rulers, religious leaders, academicians, technocrats and leaders of thought in many fields of human endeavour in Igbo land were concerned about the ethnic group, Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world.”
The petition submitted by the Igbo leaders read, “We have suffered genocidal crimes committed against us by Nigerians, especially those of the Northern Nigeria, dating back to 1945.
“This climaxed in the pogrom of 1966/67. By the general agreement of the people of Eastern Nigeria, we decided to distance ourselves from the rest of Nigeria, based on many waves of unjustified killings.
“We, therefore, elected to be known as people of independent state of Biafra in 1967.
‘’Immediately after this, Nigeria with her allies, declared war on this young state of Biafra.
“Unprepared, unexpected, we were forced to defend ourselves for 30 months before we were overwhelmed by complete blockade, starvation, heavy indiscriminate bombing of churches, markets and other public places.
“We were forced to surrender to Nigeria’s allied forces on January 12, 1970, to save the rest of the Igbo population from complete eradication.
“Despite the window dressing declaration of ‘no victor, no vanquished and the policy of rehabilitation, reconstruction and reintegration, economic strangulation and systematic exclusion of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria (Biafra) had followed since then.
“Unprovoked, unjustifiable sporadic killings of the Igbo had continued with instances of the Igbo massacre in Jos and the Kano genocide which culminated in the 1966 pogrom,” the petition said.

A Turkish Diplomat, Abdulkadir Erkahraman, has faulted the alleged invasion of the residence of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, by men of the Nigerian Army.
Recall that some IPOB members had on Sunday alleged that soldiers opened fire on the resident of Kanu, injuring several persons in the process.
However, the Assistant Director of Public Relations of the 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Major Oyegoke Gbadamosi, Ohafia, denied the alleged invasion of Kanu’s residence or killing anybody.
Reacting to the incident, Erkahraman, who once visited Kanu at his Umuahia residence, few months back, stressed that the Nigerian Army is “crossing the redline,”
In a statement on his Facebook wall, Erkahraman, who is the President of the International Nations Commercial Association in Turkey said the Nigerian government can’t stop the actualization of Biafra with what he described as “dirty games.”

IPOB: Jonathan asks Buhari to reach out to ex-Presidents, govs

Former President Goodluck Jonathan
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to summon a Council of State meeting to advise him on the crisis in the South-East.
The Council of State is an advisory body which comprises former Presidents, serving governors, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and a few other prominent Nigerians.
The former President said in a Facebook post that the tension across the country was unfortunate even as he condemned the burning of a police station by the Indigenous People of Biafra members.
He also condemned the threat to human life by several elements across Nigeria.
Jonathan said, “The reports I have received about recent developments in the country lead me to appeal to all men of good will to use whatever influence they have to push for peaceful coexistence and restraint on all sides.
“Perhaps it is time for the Council of State to intervene and offer its wise counsel. Irrespective of whatever provocation, Nigerians must never turn on each other.
“Even in the face of difficult circumstances, we must have faith that God in His infinite wisdom will guide us to finding a way out that is fair and just to all concerned.”
Jonathan, while calling for calm, said Nigerians must continue to show love to one another as this was the only way to ensure the continued existence of the country.
He called for dialogue among aggrieved parties instead of violence.
He added, “Inasmuch as there may be the need to enforce order, there is a greater need to reinforce our humanity and treat Nigerian citizens humanely whether they are from the North or South.
“Nothing justifies the desecration and destruction of religious places of worship or a police station. But even more so, nothing justifies the endangering of human life. Let us exchange ideas instead of exchanging insults and threats.”

As 2019 election fever tears APC apart

Buhari, Atiku
Even though the 2019 presidential election is about 18 months away, JESUSEGUN ALAGBE takes a look at how it is already causing cracks within the ruling All Progressives Congress party
Subtly, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has started making known his intention to run for the presidency in 2019 and in doing so, he has somewhat turned himself into an opposition figure for his own party, the All Progressives Congress.
Recently, in an interview he had with the Voice of America in Hausa, the former Vice-President criticised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
In the interview, Atiku complained that he had been dumped by the Buhari-led government, despite spending his resources on ensuring that the President got to power in May 2015.
The former Vice-President had said, “Honestly speaking, I’m still a member of the APC; I was part of all the processes, including campaigns until success was achieved.
“But sadly, soon after the formation of the government, I was sidelined; I have no relationship with the government; I’ve not been contacted even once to comment on anything and in turn, I have maintained my distance.
“They used our money and influence to get to where they are, but three years down the lane, this is where we are.”
Interestingly, Atiku’s comments came out only a few hours after the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan, declared her readiness to support his bid for the presidency against President Buhari should he (Atiku) decide to contest in 2019.
The Taraba State-born minister had, in a leaked video on social media, endorsed the former Vice-President for the 2019 presidential election.
The minister, who spoke in Hausa in the video, had referred to Atiku as, “Your Excellency, our father and our president by the grace of God, come 2019.”
She had added, “Before you are your people, your supporters for life, the people of Taraba State.”
Those who watched the leaked video might perhaps not have believed that a serving minister in the cabinet of President Buhari would declare her support for another chieftain of the party.
But Alhassan, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, confirmed that she would support Atiku in 2019 because “President Buhari has not told anybody that he would contest the 2019 presidential election.”
But even if Buhari would contest, Alhassan said she would support Atiku because since her civil service years, Atiku had been her mentor and godfather.
“He (Atiku) has remained so even now that I have joined politics. There is a reason for every political relationship,” she had said.
Expectedly, the duo’s actions have caused some uneasiness among top members of the party, with the lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Sani, telling Alhassan to resign from the Buhari administration in order to start campaigning for her benefactor (Atiku).
One of those also furious over Alhassan’s comments was Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, said to be one of the closest friends of the President.
The governor wasn’t even shy to say he and some other party chieftains never wanted Buhari to appoint the minister into his cabinet in 2015.
Political pundits believe Alhassan couldn’t have openly declared her support for Atiku for the 2019 presidency if she didn’t have the backing of other people in the party.
“It is just a matter of time before we start seeing clashes among Buhari’s and Atiku’s supporters because of 2019,” a lawyer and social commentator, Mr. Daniel Onyebuchi, said.
He suggested the minister’s comments showed that there were some “strong” hands making some moves behind the scenes which caused Alhassan to have made her pro-Atiku comments.
Onyebuchi said, “No matter how naive a politician Alhassan was, she wouldn’t have come out to declare her support for someone who is not even in the cabinet. She’s an insider declaring her support for an outsider.
“Many people think she doesn’t know what she’s doing, but she does. She is not a dumb person. The person we are talking about here was a former governorship aspirant, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of her state. She was the first woman to be appointed as the Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Judicial Council and so on.
“So when she came out to make the comments, it showed she had seen the writing on the wall. The development only proved what we had been seeing right from the outset: the APC is a divided party, full of people with different missions and purposes. There is no unity there.”
Consequently, the National Working Committee of the party was said to have planned discussing Atiku’s and Alhassan’s outbursts at a meeting during the week.
However, the meeting didn’t hold as planned as it was learnt that some of the party chieftains were divided as to whether or not Alhassan’s comments were worth deliberating upon.
Aside the latest outbursts, Atiku had as far back as 2016 started making some statements which seemed to create an impression of failure of his party and the President Buhari-led Federal Government.
Since last year, the former Vice-President has been one of the most vocal voices calling for a restructuring of the country, which Buhari had said was not on his administration’s priority list.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had on June 9, 2017 said restructuring was not on the Federal Government’s priority list.
It was probably after the calls for restructuring became intense that the party eventually set up a panel some weeks ago, headed by el-Rufai, to look at the definition of the subject.
A United States-based political scientist and founder of the Youths Must Shine, Mr. Femi Matthews, said Atiku’s call for restructuring showed that he was “practically” not on the President’s side.
He said, “If you have been observing the comments of the former Vice-President since, you would see an element of disgruntlement. He is not happy; his wings are clipped and the only way he felt he could fly was to start opposing his own party and the President.”
On August 2, 2017, the former Vice-President, had criticised the APC (and the Peoples Democratic Party) of lacking internal democracy, accusing the party of over the years refusing to hold vital meetings.
“In the absence of those meetings and elections, their existing leadership, often under the direction of the executive at the state or federal level, fills the void. That’s not party building but party bullying. And it’s certainly not a way to democratise parties and aggregate their members’ opinions, interests and aspirations,” he had said.
The former Vice-President, had also on September 11, taken a swipe at Buhari, asking him to fulfil his promise of providing security to Nigerians.
A day later, Atiku again said he could fight corruption better than Buhari.
The former Vice-President had added, “It is sickening to continue to regurgitate allegations of corruption against me by people who have failed to come forward with a single shred of evidence of my misconduct while in office.
“People who lack initiative, personal resourcefulness and ideas about wealth creation always assume that a man cannot build himself without stealing.”
Meanwhile, as Atiku has somehow started his presidency campaign, President Buhari’s supporters have also not gone to sleep, with el-Rufai; Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, among others, saying recently that they had endorsed the President for the second term should he decide to contest.
El-Rufai had said after Alhassan’s pro-Atiku comments, “I am governor today by the grace of God, (and) because President Buhari called me and said ‘go and run for Governor of Kaduna State.’ As far as 2019 is concerned, my position is that the President is looking very well, he is recuperating very fast. My hope and prayer is (that) he will contest in 2019.”
While campaigns for 2019 are subtly going on for Buhari and Atiku, political observers believe it wouldn’t be long before those in the camp of a national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, also start coming out.
A political scientist and social commentator, Mr. Hassan Abiodun, said it would be wrong for anyone to think “Tinubu is sleeping.”
He added, “We are not yet in 2018 and we are already seeing all these. I tell you, by next year, lots of intrigues will take place in the APC. Some people might be thinking because the North seems to be in control of the party, Tinubu can’t do anything.
“But by now, even the dumbest politician should know that Tinubu in a way wields a strong influence in Lagos and even in the entire Southwest. Tinubu might seem to be sleeping now, but I think he’s making his own calculations too.”
Abiodun’s submission might perhaps be the reason why Sani recently asked Buhari to reach out to Tinubu because “he (Tinubu) could “drown” the President.
Sani had made a veiled reference to Buhari and Tinubu in a Facebook post last Saturday, warning that the latter had a damaging political capacity.
The post had read, “The Lion Monarch should reach out to the aggrieved but silent Lagoon Lion so that he doesn’t explode like the hippo. The Lagoon Lion controls waters that can drown.”
The senator had confirmed that “The Lagoon” represented Lagos, while “The Lagoon King” was in reference to Tinubu, a former governor of the state.
Meanwhile, Abiodun said it was unfortunate that the APC was focusing its attention on the 2019 election when it had yet to deliver on its 2015 campaign promises to Nigerians.
He said, “Everything that has happened in the past one week — from Atiku’s outbursts, to Alhassan’s comments, to el-Rufai and other governors canvassing for Buhari while we are still in 2017 — shows that the party is not serious about governance.
“It is even more unfortunate because the party has not been able to unite itself all these years. There are various factions with different missions. This could be why the party is not delivering on its promises.
“When you have persons working for the interest of individuals rather than for the interest of Nigerians, it means something is wrong with our system. Even if the party wants to think of 2019, it shouldn’t be distracted from serving the electorate who brought it to power in the first place.”
Also according to Matthews, it was wrong for the APC to allow 2019 presidential election take centre stage when the party had yet to meet all its electoral promises.
He said, “It is shameful that many Nigerian politicians still think the citizens are fools in this age. I plead with Nigerians, especially the youth, to be conscious of those who are good at governance and those who don’t know what they are doing.
“The latter do little or nothing at governance, dwelling much on politicking, while the former are those whose actions show that they have the interest of the people at heart.”

Biafra: Masari tells Nigerians what to do about IPOB. By Ameh Comrade Godwin

Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has called on Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s moves against the Indigenous People of Biafra and other secessionist groups.
Masari made this call while speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa on Friday where he observed the Ju’maat.
He urged Nigerians not to repeat the mistake of ignoring the activities of IPOB just as they ignored Boko Haram before the terrorist sect began launching attacks in other parts of the county.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives warned that if IPOB is ignored, the group could consume the whole country just like Boko Haram almost consumed the whole country.
Masari said, “On the general note on what is going on in the country, I think there is need for Nigerians to be very responsible in terms of dealing with issues of this kind in this country.
“When the problem of Boko Haram started in the country, we looked the other way and it nearly consumed the nation. So, under these circumstances any agitation that is likely to lead the nation to the kind of problem we had, I think all Nigerians should support the government and put a stop to it.”
He said, “As regards the tension in the country, we in Katsina State have put in necessary measures to ensure that the people living in the state irrespective of where they come from are safe.”
The governor added the state would continue to subscribe to the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution and work with the Federal Government to forestall secessionist threats.

Gov. Wike Commits To One Nigeria, Warns Trouble Makers To Steer Clear Of Rivers State. by Sahara Reporters, New York

Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Neysom Wike, has expressed his commitment and that of the people of the state to the corporate existence of the country. He also warned troublemakers to give the state a wide berth. He disclosed this in a broadcast to indigenes and residents of the state on Friday.
While expressing concerns over the activities of the Indigenous   Peoples of Biafra   (IPOB), particularly the possibility of attacks on non-indigene living in Rivers State, Mr. Wike said the people of Rivers people fully subscribe to Nigeria’s corporate existence and its indivisibility.
"As a people, we shall continue to support the unity and peaceful co-existence of all ethnic nationalities and work towards actualizing our collective aspirations for a just, inclusive and progressive nation. Rivers State belongs to all those who live in it. We heartily welcome any Nigerian who wishes to reside here and go about with his or her lawful businesses," he said.

He warned that his administration will not tolerate attacks by any group of other Nigerians living in Oyigbo or any other part of the state, adding that those seeking to cause trouble should avoid doing so in the state.
"Nobody should take our hospitality and peaceful disposition for weakness,  as we are capable of dealing decisively with any situation that threatens the peace and serenity in the state," he cautioned.
He called on the indigenes of the state to be vigilant and resist being used to foment trouble. Mr. Wike also advised residents of the state to report any suspicious conduct or movements in their areas to law enforcement agencies for immediate action.
While admitting that indigenes of the state may harbor misgivings about the country's structural problems, he argued that dialogue, not violence, remains the best way to resolve contending political issues.
"We pray the federal government to initiate a meaningful national dialogue to peacefully resolve the structural challenges that are threatening Nigeria’s stability and progress. In the same vein, we urge the security agencies to exercise maximum restraint and conform to international rules of engagement and best practice while responding to provocative acts from ill-advised groups," said the governor.
He alleged that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Rivers State are sabotaging the government's security architecture.
"Since assumption of office a little over two years ago, we have done as much as we can within the limits of available resources to ensure that our dear state is secure, safe, and peaceful for residents and visitors alike. This we have done by providing tremendous moral, material, and financial support,  including patrol vans, gun boats, and armored personnel carriers to the security agencies to fight crime and maintain peace in the state.
Indeed, no other state government has provided as much logistical support to the security agencies as the Rivers State government," he boasted.
Despite these, he claimed, operatives of the Rivers State SARS have continued to compromise security in the state. For months, he explained, the state government has been receiving reports from victims, who have been robbed by SARS operatives under the guise of conducting searches on the victims.
"They employ several malevolent methods, including planting illicit drugs on their unsuspecting victims as a bargaining chip, or forcefully taking them to ATM boots to collect a specified amount of money as ransom for their freedom. Furthermore,   while the noticeable increase of kidnapping incidents along the   East-West   Road and the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road are worrisome, some of the rescued victims have reportedly pointed SARS operatives as the ones responsible for most of the kidnappings along those roads," Mr. Wike claimed.
He called for an investigation into the allegations to establish the truth about them.  He alleged that a SARS operative was recently killed during his involvement in a kidnap operation as a member of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Squad. The incident, he said, lends credence to SARS' direct involvement in criminal activities across the state.
He called on the people of the state to be vigilant and protect themselves from  SARS operatives in Rivers State. The governor also said his administration is willing to work together with the security agencies and the police to ensure the safety and security of lives of Rivers State residents.
